EVE, COH, E&B, ShadowBane & AO… what I think

Written by andy on Saturday, August 21st, 2004 in Gaming.

This is part of an email thread that I sent to my friend JR. We were checking out EVE and this was his 1st experience into an MMOG:

I have to say that I had more fun with Earth and Beyond than EVE. For me the faster paced games are what I am willing to spend my hard earn monthly donuts (hmmm donuts) on.

As with all games, there is a certain level of redundancy and there just isn’t real way to avoid it. I think you will agree with me on that. Right?

I would imagine that with eve, things will pick up, but it is the ‘ramp up time’ that makes this game drag for me.

Anarchy Online - I would have still been playing that game if there wasn’t so much lag. The lag issues have been resolved, but that is mainly because they lost most of their subscribers with a couple of bad patches. Not a good solution if you think about it.

Earth and Beyond - this was a real good game, but they never added any story content or added new regions of space for you to explore or do combat in and EA finally pulled the plug because of a reorg. Just the thought of having your own ship with weapons, power and shields. What a rush.. alas.

ShadowBane - not a bad game, but the PVP aspect of it sucked! You could be out adventuring at your own leisure , have this awesome battle and just be barely alive. When all of sudden some a’hole comes along and takes you out. Sure, there was certain zones where PVP wasn’t allowed, but you couldn’t get the new cool stuff without being in those areas and they had lag as well.

Starwars Galaxies - Awesome game! If you like Everquest, then you will love this game. There was a learning curve though, if you are an EQ player, then you would fit right in. If you never really played EQ, then you would get burned out on the periods where you just have to sit around and wait for your non-interactive repetitive tasks were completed. The graphics and sounds were authentic to the SW era and if I would have stuck with it I am sure I would have had some fun, but none of the others in the gang continued to play after the LAN.

COH - Quick ramp up, fast paced and great bang for the buck. The deveoplers are always active in the forums and they have a pretty simple concept. Make the game playable, fun and keep up the customer service and you keep them coming back. They are always working on adding content, expanding the story and making the game fun. This is a game for those that were ever into comic books and wanted to play a super hero. No lag, no PVP (yet) and almost everyone plays this game and is a gas to have everyone on the phone and start to mop up the streets of Paragon City!

EVE - Interface needs work (to many freaking windows in the game) , not a very quick ramp up, requires a certain level of micro management from my perspective; however it is a sci-fi game and the sound and graphics are pretty good.

World of Warcraft - ? Well, I don’t know. I didn’t even try to get into the beta. I didn’t care all that much for WarCraft III and would rather see an World of Starcraft!

42,000+ emails

Written by andy on Saturday, August 21st, 2004 in Software.

Just goes to show you, that you always need to follow up on all your email accounts. It would seem that as a result of those last couple of big emails virus’ that was going around. My web hosting email address was getting a ton. I am talking 317megs worth of emails since last March, this might not sound like much, but hey.. I couldn’t even down load it or view it through the web. So, I just deleted it.

HL2 vs Doom 3?

Written by andy on Sunday, August 15th, 2004 in Gaming.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that “hands down” HL2 is going to be a much better game than Doom3. I know, this will most likely generate a ton of “hate”, “spam” and perhaps a letter bomb or two, but I just watched the latest HL2 trailer and I just might have to call in sick to work on this day. Nah.. not really! I just think that the wait is going to be worth it.

You can check out what I said about Doom3 in the forums.

XP SP2 - Now or later….

I downloaded it and installed it, so far nothing bad has happened. A word of advise, please make a ‘restore’ point 1st. Just in case.

Games and Spell Checking for FireFox

Written by andy on Wednesday, August 4th, 2004 in Gaming, Software.

Ok.. COH will get a little less usage now that Doom3 is out. But, I am having a blast with my “Daredevil” look a like on Pinacle.

Doom3? How is it? Well.. click the link above and see what I think.

I am the worst writer, speller there is. That is why when I was using IE, I had IESpell to help me out. Now that I have switched over to Firefox. I needed a replacement solution and this is whenI found spellbound and so far am completely happy with it.

GC Lan Party Day 2 Report

Written by andy on Sunday, August 1st, 2004 in GamersCircle, Gaming.

Thanks to the GamersCircle Supergroup in City of Heroes there was less crime than before. The likes of Skulls, Hellions, Clockwork and Lost knew what it meant to go up agaisn’t this band of do gooders.

So, as you can tell there was much more COH played, there was also some BF1942 played along with some Broodwar too. It was pretty much like the 1st two days, but not as much computer setup and testing going on. Just lots of gaming with all kinds of movies going on in the backgroup. There will be more details as to the contest winners.
