A total re-wire

Written by andy on Sunday, March 12th, 2006 in Hardware.

It was a fire marshall nightmare just waiting to happen and I suppose anyone that has a Tivo, Xbox, a laptop, a gaming pc and a htpc, a pos printer, a label printer and a general purpose laser printer is going to have a problem with:

Wires!

The TV sits in an alcove, so trying to run the needed wires (power, xbox and coax) and not have them be to much of an eye sore can be slightly challenging.

Then there is my main computer where I do my gaming, podcasting, rss’ing, surfing, gaming, blogging and other stuff is just to the left of the alcove (this is where the TV sits remember), then above my monitor is a shelve that has my game library on one shelf, a transitional shelf (don’t know what I am going to do with that one yet) and the top shelf which currently have my Iron Man action figure collection on it.

Continuing on the desk below the alcove is the Tivo with my laptop port replicator, to the right of that is my phone and then the xbox (1st one, the 360 is downstairs on the big screen), then the podcasting equipment.

Above the Xbox is another custom shelf that is dedicated to my Ultimate X-men and X-Men Evolution busts, continuing on the desk after the podcasting equipment is the printers for the business which are two small thermal printers. (one is for the Fedex and Postal labels and another one for POS reciepts from GamersCircle store purchases), then above those items is another shelf setup that is currently for movies and comic book related statues, busts and toys.

The point is that there is room, but not much desktop real estate for everything that I need and then comes the frelling wires. Needless to say, I had a planning session and it was going to be a pretty good setup, but one wire (the monitor’s dvi cable) was not going to be able to make the connection, but moving the tivo from the previous location did free up some unsightly wires, elevated the laptop closer to eye level and did clean up the miles of telephone cord that was giving my internal bleeding each time I have to look under the desk.

It isn’t pefect, but I am looking in the hall way now and I see some extra uneeded wires (honest) and it looks a little neater. Perhaps in another 12 months when I ‘really’ need to do this again, I will make sure that I have all of the correct cables ready to do this.
