Silent PC - part 2
Written by andy on March 29th, 2006 in Hardware.
In Part 2, we will focus on the case fans. Most of you might not think that much about these; however these little items are both good and bad.
They are good, because they keep all of those complex components cool and avoid those untimely melt downs or crashes. They are bad, because they collect dust and over time will start to make noise, of which some may not notice, but go ahead and turn off your computer when it is only you around and see just how quiet it gets in your computer room.
Both of the Coolmaster cases in this project utilized one case fan in the back
Then there is also one case fan on top
then there is room up front (in front of where normally the hard drives are mounted) for two fans

Case fans come in a few different sizes, all of the case fans in this projects were 80mm. When you start to look for case fans, you will find that there is a wide range of manufacturers out there, try to do a little research and see what the majority is going with and see what they have to say about them.In addition to the size of the fan, you can get case fans that offer different lighting and colors patterns not to mention that you can also replace the standard fan grill with something that is more appealing to your taste or theme too. After reading a few reviews and articles, we went decided to go with AcoustiFan C-Series

Advise: As you start to remove the old fans, make note of the air flow direction. You don’t want to push air the wrong way and make things worse. The front fans should be placed so that they draw air into the case, the rear and top fans will push the air out.The front fans can be removed without taking the faceplate off. There are four small screws on the side of the grill in front. Removing them allows the grill and filter (yuck!) to be removed allowing access to the fans. We removed the case fronts to aid in placing the fan controller. (which will be in part 3)
