Happy Birthday, Star Wars!

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Movies.

Can you believe it’s been almost thirty years since Star Wars first hit the silver screen? I’ll bet there are a few of you out there who DON’T want to be reminded of this, but hey if you remember then you are not that far gone yet.

This was before you could buy advanced tickets, fandango and the Internet.

X-Men 3 – Midnight Showing

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Movies.

So, if you try to call tonight…

I decided that I didn’t want to try muscle my way through any crowds and sit next to people I don’t know.

Interesting, there was an 11.59p showing and no 12.10a showing, but when I went to get my ticket, the 11.59p showing has a little sticker over it saying, “Sold Out”.

XBox 360 – HD-DVD Pics

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Gaming.

Here is what the new HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 will look like.

From what can be seen and have read, it would appear to be a USB 2.0 device and be powered via AC. I am not too happy with the style, but if the price is right then. Hey! Why not.

BF2 – Community Update

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Gaming.

After a thorough investigation into the issues plaguing the server browser after the 1.3 Update, we believe that a last minute update in the way the Battlefield servers and Gamespy servers communicate may be the cause.

We have decided to revert this change in an attempt eliminate these browser issues. Please note that no uninstalling or re-installing is required by players or server admins. All servers currently running must be restarted once this change has taken place.

Please also note that if you are experiencing CTD issues upon start up that any alternate-ranking redirections in your windows “Hosts” file must be removed.

The reversion will occur at 2:00 PST. We are continuing to review other issues players have noted with 1.3. Further updates will be posted to this space as they become available.”

Star Trek: Legacy – Preview

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Gaming.

There really hasn’t been a previous title in the franchise that has showed off the beauty and power that the starship combat in the Star Trek series can offer. Shields glow brightly when struck by the glowing lances of phaser fire, but when shields fail, holes begin to form in the hull and expose glowing ship components, which leave a trail of smoke and debris.

The lighting effects in the game are phenomenal, as evidenced by the light bloom and glare a sun makes as it suddenly comes into view around a planet. The ship models themselves are very well modeled and are easily the best looking Star Trek starships in a video game to date.

The HUD that displays your ship information, targeting, and other data is both useful and minimalist, letting the graphics of the game itself fill up most of the on-screen action.

The Vinny Code (aka DaVinci Code)

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Movies.

Yes, I finally got around to seeing this movie. I have been slightly consumed with catching up on Stargate SG-1, that I haven’t wanted to fight any crowds.

I never read the book (ha as I only read comic books) This movie had the same pace and puzzle solving style as National Treasure and I liked it!

This movie is full of chases, discoveries and escapes which are intercut with another story, involving an albino (aka A Ghost), who works under the command of the Teacher, a mysterious figure at the center of a conspiracy to conceal the location of the Holy Grail, what it really is, and what that implies.

I am not one for saying whether any of this was accurate or not, I just went to see the movie and since I didnt’ have to pay my way, makes it a more enjoyable experience for me.

To Read or not To Read

If you are like me and spend time browsing the Internet? There is so much out there and you just cant’ read it all right? So, what do you do when you find something with your favorite browser?

If you find it hard to manage your “to read” web pages, just try “toread“, an email-based bookmark service.

“toread” gives you a simple way to go through your “toread” web pages. It’s simple, free and handy after all, all-in-emails! As you receive your “toread” websites by email, you can save them in your local disk and browse them at any time, with no online connection required.

Stargate SG-1 Season Five – Yummy!!

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in TV.

This series just keeps getting better and better and yes better.

In keeping up its high level of continuity, building on past seasons and previous episodes — there are now very few stand along episodes. This allows a sense of progression and achievement — problems are solved — without detracting from the tension — new, bigger problems take their place.

Yet there is still place for the occasional humor like episode: Wormhole X-Treme (the 100th episode) being a highlight.

So, I am now on to the next batch discs and I will not reveal what has transpired in season 5 which was a biggy.

The most exciting news on this front involved Battlestar Galactica, which airs on the NBC Universal owned Sci Fi Channel.

Debuting later this year will be a Web series spin-off for the acclaimed series called Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance. Lasting ten episodes, The Resistance will fill in the gap between season two and the upcoming season three.

Dragon Riders of Pern ready for the Big Screen?

Written by andy on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 in Movies.

pern_movie.jpgAnne McCaffrey’s popular fantasy series Pern is at long last coming to the big screen. Canadian production company Copperheart Entertainment has optioned all — yes, ALL — of McCaffrey’s nineteen Pern novels.

No word yet on how many they want to bring to the screen, but they could really milk this sucker for a lot of films if they make them right and get some good box office turnout. With the size of the series there are almost literally endless possibilities based on what Cinematical has to say.
