The Devil Wears Prada – Review

Written by andy on Monday, July 3rd, 2006 in Movies.

Based on the best-selling novel by Lauren Weisberger, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA stars two-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep as high-powered fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly. Anne Hathaway also stars, as Miranda’s new assistant, a small-town girl in her first job out of college, trying to navigate a world she’s only glimpsed in print – while surviving her impossibly demanding new boss.

Through out this movie, I kept having flash backs to another movie that had the same basic premis called Two Weeks Notice which starred Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant.

Miranda is the boss from hell, and Andy has serious journalistic ambitions and absolutely no interest in fashion. But, even though everyone on the magazine treats her like a pariah and wants her to quit her impossible job, she decides to stick it out.

Gradually, she rises to the challenge and the movie becomes both a Cinderella story, as Andy is transformed into a fashion-plate and workhorse; and a morality tale, in which she must decide between her “good” values and the “bad” values of workaholic corporate America.

The movie has a lot going for it: a privileged look inside the world of fashion journalism, a magical interlude in a storybook Paris, bright supporting performances by Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, the likable presence of Hathaway, and, of course, Streep. This flix will not be making to my buy pile , but keep your Netflix ques open.

DDO: Drow Race Revealed!

Written by andy on Monday, July 3rd, 2006 in Gaming.

Kirris Tor’kha of the Venomblade slipped quietly through the jungle foliage of the postern gate wilds, crouching down behind a rock to observe her surroundings. The decadent city of Stormreach lay just ahead, built by the foreigners upon the bones of the old giant city. This is the city that would become her new home.

She was sent to be an emissary of sorts – the outsiders were vast in numbers and were growing more powerful each day from the riches they plundered from the ruins of Xen’drik, causing the Elders concern. These newcomers were a force that could no longer be ignored, and they hoped that with careful assistance, they could be guided to greater ends than simple tomb raiding.

Whispering a brief prayer to Vulkoor the Hunter, Kirris bade farewell to the comforts of the jungle and sprinted across the final clearing to reach the harbor gate. Halting before the surprised guard, her first challenge of the many to come began – parleying her way into the city itself…

Most Drow choose a life of adventure out of necessity, given the dangers of their homeland. Still, they greatly desire personal power, and many Drow take up the mantle of adventurer seeking to satisfy their ambitions. The majority of Drow follow the evil scorpion-god Vulkoor, though exposure to the cultures of Stormreach has brought a few of them to less malevolent deities.

The elves of Eberron were born on the mysterious southern continent of Xen’drik, where they were slaves of the giant kingdoms. Tens of thousands of years ago, Elf slaves rebelled against their masters. Unlike other Elf races who fled the continent, the Drow stayed behind on Xen’drik. Today most of the Drow live within the ancient giant ruins, hoping to take vengeance on their former masters and to learn the secrets of the giants’ long-lost might. The Drow believe that they alone preserve the dignity and valor of the Elf race, dismissing the rebels who fled to Aerenal and their Valenar heirs.

Only recently, a few Drow have allied themselves with foreign-born heroes who have come to Stormreach. Members of the Venomblade tribe led by Elder Durandimon, these skilled warriors, cunning trackers, and wielders of arcane power have joined their might with their new friends to turn back to the tide of evil that threatens both human-dominated cities and the wilds of Xen’drik that the Drow claim as their own.

In order to gain the approval of the drow tribes and access one of their great heroes for your side, you must first prove yourself a hero of renown. To do this, succeed in many of the quests and adventurers located about Stormreach. In each of those, you’ll gain favor that’s noted in your own adventure compendium. You get more favor the more difficult the quest, especially if you dare to accept challenges that are hard or elite. Once you’ve reached a certain amount of favor, the drow will send you a message through Stormreach’s new mail system about the availability of their bravest and strongest.

  • +2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma, -2 Constitution: Also known as dark Elves, Drow are nimble, clever, and magnetic, but physically delicate.
  • Magical Defense: Drow are immune to magic sleep effects, and they gain a +2 saving throw bonus against Enchantment spells and an additional +2 Will save bonus against spells and spell-like effects. Finally, Drow characters begin play with Spell Resistance 11, and this resistance can be increased as the Drow gains levels.
  • +2 bonus on Listen, Search and Spot checks: A Drow’s senses are extremely sensitive.
  • Bonus Weapon Proficiency Feats: Drow are proficient with the rapier, shortsword, and shuriken.

New Rogue Changes in WOW 1.12

Written by andy on Monday, July 3rd, 2006 in Gaming.

According to tenative censorship information the Rogue class is the third most played class in Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and in the next content patch (1.12), they’ll finally receive their class overhaul.

Blizzard Community Manager Drysc posted a pretty complete list of tenative Rogue changes scheduled for the content patch. These changes include adjustments to the functionality of abilities like Sprint and the incorporation of new talents like “Weapon Expertise” which increases weapon skill with all melee weapons. Players will be able to test these changes on the Test Realm when the “beta-type” realm goes Live in the coming weeks. Expect to see further revisions to the changes once Blizzard begins collecting feedback from its oh-so-vocal playerbase. via 1UP

Jabra Debuts Bluetooth Adapter for iPod

Written by andy on Monday, July 3rd, 2006 in Hardware.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the little white earbuds, it’s the annoying white cable running from the earbuds to your bag, belt, or pocket.

Telephony device and accessories maker Jabra is shipping its A120s and A125s Bluetooth adapters for portable media players: the A120s plugs into anything with a 3.5 mm headset jack, while the A125s is designed specifically for Apple’s iPod and iPod nanos, since the Cupertino mothership has remained characteristically mum on future product plans, and whether iPods will ever acquire Bluetooth wireless tech. via Designtechnica

My Xbox 360 Blog

He is funny when I am active and spend time with him, but then there are those times that he will act all wounded.

You would think I had died and gone to heaven when gamerscircle360 showed up to play. Gamer score stands at 1040. That is a gain of 45 points over last time! He played The Outfit gaining 2 achievements, and then I was like, 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100001 01110010 01100101 00100000 01100001 01110111 01100101 01110011 01101111 01101101 01100101… I’m just kidding, we don’t really talk like that.

Firewall – Review

Written by andy on Monday, July 3rd, 2006 in TV.

Got another batch of Netflix in.

Harrison Ford’ character is Jack Stanfield, a computer security specialist who keeps hackers out of the accounts of the Seattle bank he works for. However; just like things are in the corporate world, another bank has bought his bank, and the new boss appears to be a jerk, so Jack is about to go freelance.

He meets with potential client Bill Cox for drinks. As Jack gets in his car to drive home, Cox plops himself in the back seat, pulls out a gun, drops his American accent and announces that his associates have just take Jack’s family hostage.

Cox’s men are high-tech surveillance and computer experts, and they have just made Jack’s home their base. Jack has to go to the office the next day and transfer $1 billion to Cox’s Cayman Islands account or they’ll kill his family.

Ah, but there’s a glitch in Cox’s well-laid plan. The central terminal that Jack must use to make the transfer is no longer in Seattle, but in the merged bank’s new home office in Kansas City. So Cox’s ultimatum to Jack changes: Hack through the bank’s security system that you designed, or your family gets it.

I thought that Firewall was an entertaining movie with very good game of cat and mouse played out with computer codes.  If you are one that likes a movie that includes computers and other high tech talk, then you should enjoy this one.
