Lag Kills? Blame it on your keyboard?

Written by andy on Thursday, July 6th, 2006 in Gaming.

I have noticed from time to time that when I am playing online (mainly in City of Villians and World of Warcraft) that I have been getting this ‘hiccup’ effect when I am playing.

The best way to describe this is when I am running, walking, flying from quest/mission to quest/mission that my toon will stop and then continue, stop and then continue and so on. Usually, I can clear this up with either a reboot of my PC, reset my internet connection or I have been also been able to either blame it on a game server. Also something as basic as swapping out the batteries would seem to fix the problem too.

However; for giggles I thought about seeing if it was happening when my character was in ‘auto-run’ mode. To my surprise, not once did my toon ‘hiccup’ in either game, but it would ‘hiccup’ when I was pressing and holding down the “W” key.

I then swapped keyboards and guess what? It was like magic, the ‘hiccup’ went away…in both games!

Even though the previous keyboard showed no degradation when it came to normal day to day typing, it would seem that the keyboard suffered in performance when it came to gaming.

For the past 3-4 years, I have been using the Logitech Mx700, mainly because their newer keyboards they have gone and screwed up and moved the whole ‘insert’, ‘home’, ‘page up’, ‘page down’, ‘end’ and ‘delete’ keys around and I never liked it, but it would seem that I might have to just get used to it.
