Command & Conquer 3 Update

Written by andy on Saturday, September 30th, 2006 in Gaming.

The Command & Conquer 3 website is sporting a new blog update by EA Executive Producer Mike Verdu. The topic is Technology in 2047. Here’s a snip:

Space technology has raced ahead. GDI forward bases are now equipped with launch capability for drop pods, orbital artillery deployment, and other space-based weapons and intelligence systems. Ion Cannon technology has continued to evolve, taking enormous strides in lethality and accuracy. The Earth is ringed with a necklace of next-generation battle stations armed with powerful new Ion Cannons tied into the most sophisticated anti-satellite/anti-missile defense system in history. Ion Cannons can now hit large numbers of moving targets in space and the upper atmosphere as well as on the ground. The brain for this spectacular ASAT/ABM system is currently ground-based given the vast computing and communication requirements. However, a new generation of orbital platforms and space stations are being built with an eye to the future, with the crown jewel of the fleet being a dramatically expanded and upgraded GDSS Philadelphia.

Cryptic Not Abandoning City of Heroes

Written by andy on Thursday, September 28th, 2006 in Gaming.

In case you were worried that Cryptic would be ditching it’s City of Heroes series of superpowered massively multiplayer games in favor of the newly announced Marvel Superheroes themed mmog series, a new letter from the Producer has been posted on the CoH site (thanks MastemaDeicide) assuring folks that is not the case:

By now you may have read about Cryptic Studios and Microsoft’s upcoming new venture and we at Cryptic want to assure our loyal players that we and the good folks at our publisher, NCsoft, are fully committed to City of Heroes and City of Villains. We have a full team of programmers, artists, designers, and producers devoted to creating and maintaining the best experience in the “City of” world of games. This team is, and will remain completely separate from other teams working on other games at Cryptic. Like fantasy, sci-fi, and simulation, comic book heroes is its own genre, capable of supporting multiple titles. City of Heroes was created with a single purpose: bring the world of comic book heroes alive. With that in mind, Cryptic is investing resources into our “City of” team to fully realize its own unique vision.

It has been a few months since I played either COH or COV and with the announcement of the Marvel Universe Online, I think that the days of this MMO are numbered.

Marvel MMO Coming to Xbox 360 and PC

Written by andy on Wednesday, September 27th, 2006 in Gaming.

Marvel and Cryptic — whose well-documented legal rivalry regarding City of Heroes alleged infringement on Marvel’s characters — in conjunction with Microsoft Game Studios announced their intention to release a Massive Multiplayer Online game that will take place in the Marvel universe.

The game, tentatively titled Marvel Universe Online will release for both the Xbox 360 and the PC platform and is expected to take advantage of Microsoft’s Live Anywhere infrastructure.

This partnership between Cryptic and Marvel represents an interesting coup in the game industry — in addition to teaming up despite previous bad blood between the two companies, the Marvel license is being used by a company who isn’t Activision. via 1UP
