Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Returns With New Series

Written by andy on Thursday, October 19th, 2006 in Uncategorized.

Joe Casey is back with a second series of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, this time showcasing the most unlikely team line-up in Avengers history: Goliath, Wasp, Hawkeye, Black Panther, and Vision.

A new team has risen up to take up the mantle of the originals, and now these members have a lot to live up to. Questions abound for these new mismatched heroes. Can Goliath handle the duties of being a leader? How can the Black Panther be both an Avenger and the king of his own country? Will Hawkeye survive his own dysfunctional love life? Who is the Vision and can he be trusted?

Casey along with artist Will Rosado and Dave Johnson on covers bring an exciting chapter in the history of the Avengers to light. You dare not miss the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Problem with a BF2142, blame Microsoft

Written by andy on Thursday, October 19th, 2006 in Gaming.

“Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update.”

A quick Google search of KB917422 brings up many gamers, developers and publishers bitching about the Windows update breaking various games and applications. What have users found is the easiest way to solve the problem? Remove KB917422 or install hotfix KB924867, apparently available by contacting Microsoft directly by calling 800-936-3100.

Even if you simply remove KB917422, you are not opening yourself up to anonymous hackers. This could only happen in two scenarios: “one user running on the machine can force himself to a higher privilege,” which means they must have access to your computer locally, or visiting “a specially designed hostile website can force its way to the users privilege, if the user voluntarily performs a sequence of operations.” Do either of those sound likely?

For those interested, however, here are the steps to remove KB917422:

1. Go to START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS icon.
2. Tick the little box that says SHOW UPDATES.
3. At the bottom of the list of installed programs, look for the update called Security Update for Windows XP (KB917422).
4. Click on it to highlight it and click the REMOVE button.
5. Once the update has been uninstalled, Restart the machine.

BF2142 Automatic Login

Written by andy on Thursday, October 19th, 2006 in Gaming.

Automatic Login allows you to automatically login to your EA Account and the particular Soldier you want to use each time you start the game. This is relatively straightforward to do and requires that you edit your BF2142 command line options. To do this go to your BF2142 launch icon, right-click on it and select Properties. Then in the Target box put a single blank space after the last character and insert +eaAccountName [Accountname] +eaAccountPassword [Password] +soldierName [soldiername].

As an example of this, suppose my EA Account name which I use to login to BF2142 is GetMeSome, and the password for this account is SpankMeHard, and finally the soldier you want to use to play online has the name MrBendOver. This means I’d have to alter my command line to look something like this (note the added items in italics):

“C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142 Demo\BF2142.exe” +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024 +eaAccountName GetMeSome +eaAccountPassword SpankMeHard +soldierName MrBendOver
