Halo 3 Launch FAQ

Written by andy on Friday, September 28th, 2007 in Gaming.

Q: I started playing the campaign at my house but when I took my HDD/MU to my friend’s house and put it on his Xbox 360, it won’t let me resume my campaign. What’s up?

A: This is a known issue that our team is investigating. Currently, you are unable to transfer campaign progress to another Xbox 360 console whether you use a memory unit or take your hard drive. You can load up any mission or insertion point you’ve previously completed but you won’t be able to “resume” from your last saved spot.

You would think that they would have tested this, at least it is documented, but still… CRAP!!!

Resident Evil: Extinction

Written by andy on Monday, September 24th, 2007 in Movies.

Resident Evil: Extinction picks up several years after Apocalypse. Alice now in hiding in the Nevada desert, once again joins forces with Carlos Olivera and L.J. , along with new survivors Claire Redfield, K-Mart and Nurse Betty to try to eliminate the deadly virus that threatens to make every human being undead… as well as to seek justice.

Since being captured by the Umbrella Corporation, Alice has been subjected to biogenic experimentation and became genetically altered, with super-human strengths, senses and dexterity. These skills, and more, will be needed if she and her newfound friends are to remain alive.

It isn’t until Alice meets up with Claire’s caravan – after the visually impressive, but non-story advancing crow attack sequence – that the film begins to tap back into the Resident Evil movie mythology. So much time has been spent in the disjointed buildup (scenes that have nothing to do with the main story arc) that little is used getting to know its characters, new and old.

The only character we see with any kind of development is Alice – whose enhanced powers are explained in a moment of glossed over dialogue – and Dr. Isaacs – whose transformation into the ultimate evil was under-utilized. Even the Umbrella’s Super Zombies, a concept that could have worked well, was under done as well.

All in all, it was a good zombie flick with many opportunities for you to mess your pants.

IMAP vs. POP3?

Written by andy on Friday, September 21st, 2007 in Software.

As some of you might know, I have had a recent need to be able to manage my email from two different locations without having to worry about moving files back and forth, thus IMAP.

What is IMAP?
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local computer. IMAP is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you on the servers. You (by using your e-mail client, such as Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger or Eudora) can view just the header information, which includes the sender and subject of the letter, allowing you to decide whether to download the message or not. You can also create and manipulate folders or mailboxes on the server, delete messages, or search for certain parts or an entire note.

What is POP3?
Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) is also a standard protocol for receiving e-mail and is also a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you on the servers. With POP3, your mail is saved in a mailbox on the remote server until you check your mail. When you check your mail, all of the mail is immediately downloaded to your computer and is no longer maintained on the server.

What’s the Difference?
IMAP can be thought of as a remote file server, while POP3 can be thought of as a “store-and-forward” service. Ultimately they both accomplish similar tasks but often one will suit your needs better than the other.

What are the Benefits of IMAP?
Since you can view just the header information without downloading the entire message, you can delete large messages without wasting time for downloading them. Also, because the messages remain on the server, you can access your mail from multiple locations and ensure that your messages are always available for you. And, with the messages remaining on the servers if your computer crashes you don’t have to worry about losing your messages. I also like to think of this has another flavor of the Microsoft’ Echange server, minus all of the calendar and other PIM crap.

What are the Benefits of POP3?
Since all of your messages are downloaded immediately, after you check your mail at your computer, you do not need to actually be connected to the Internet to read your email. Also, because the messages are downloaded to your computer you do not need to worry about accruing disk usage charges because the messages do not stay on the servers.

What are the Drawbacks to IMAP?
Unlike POP3, IMAP requires continual access to the server during the time that you are working with your mail. Also, because the messages are stored on the server, it becomes much easier to go over your disk quota. However, you can reduce this risk by taking specific steps to not leave your Sent Mail, Drafts or Trash on the server. And like any new service, there is a slight learning curve to get used to IMAP since most people are used to using POP3.

What are the Drawbacks to POP3?
The major drawback to POP3 is that it is an older protocol that was designed before people were able to easily send large emails with attachments. Because POP3 downloads all the mail on the server at once, people are occasionally unable to successfully receive their messages because POP3 will get stuck or disconnect when trying to download large messages. To fix this people will either need to contact tech support or log onto our web mail system to delete the large messages themselves. Also, if you use POP3 and are traveling or check your mail from multiple locations, you will not be able to view any of your old mail because the messages only exist on the computer on which you originally received your mail.

I have yet to experience a service outtage with IMAP from my provider, but in the event that there is an outtage. I am actually forwarding my email to a GMAIL account then to my IMAP account, this way I have a backup.

IMAP

This is a must if you are attempting to operate your email from 2 different locations.  I am so very happy that someone came up with this technology and that my hosting provider supports it.

Zombie Proof 2

Written by andy on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 in Comic Books.

For 20 years, people thought locksmith Billy Bob Driwahl was at least a little crazy because he offered the rather unusual service of ‘zombie-proofing’ in his Yellow Pages ad.

Now that the world’s being overrun by zombies, how did he know beforehand? It’s Billy Bob and Rufus vs. the Mayor’s idiot henchmen and a hoard of undead as the zombie crisis reaches San Rosina in full force.

Can Billy Bob persuade his fellow citizens to zombie-proof their homes?

Spiderman Friend of Foe, Halo 3, New TV starting Up

Written by andy on Monday, September 17th, 2007 in GamersCircle, Gaming.

I gave the Spider-Man: Friend or Foe demo on XBL a whirl the other day. It was a cute little demo and is clearly aimed at a younger audience, I got a kick out of the cartoony style, and what this game promotes that other titles should is that it is co-op.

I think I’m starting to get a little excited about Halo 3 next week. I haven’t really gotten all spun up in the hype over this game, but I have no doubt that when it arrives I’ll enjoy it.

Also there is just a whole bunch of new television that is starting up starting today too.

36 Days, Dawn of the Dead & Thor

Written by andy on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 in Comic Books, GamersCircle.

Today is the 36th day that GamersCircle Comics opened it’s door and started to bring back pop culture to the fine folks of Folsom, CA and the surrounding areas.  It is just the best feeling to hear those that had been readers and collectors start up (after either slowing or just halting their pulp readings since there was no place close) again, due to the fact that there is now a local comic book store.

I just love hearing the ‘inner’ geek coming out in so many different people and from such a wide variety of age groups too.  (awesome!)

It just isn’t the comic book folks either, there is a steady stream of RPG’ers , Magic the Gathering players, D&D Mini Players,  Yugioh players and more.

Am I tried after working 7 days straight for the last 36 days?  Nope , in fact I am having so much fun.  Don’t get me wrong, there are those things that I wish I didn’t have to do, but since this is my business, no one else is going to do it for me, so that leaves pretty much me. :)   However; the fun factor far out weighs the work factor.

Yes, there is the occasional issue with the flipping POS software or running out of pennies , but those are the pains one will have to deal with when running an retail business.

Speaking of Magic the Gathering – I have gotten back into this trading card game.  I mean it has only been 16 years since I stopped playing when it was in Alpha.  After watching the local group of MTG’ers play and saw just how fun it still is.  I threw down some of my hard earned dollars and built a ‘Sliver’ deck , but I think I am having a little more fun with my ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (mainly zombies and undead)  deck.

Oh yeah!  Thor #3 – holy Christ!
