FINAL CRISIS #2 - Umm What?

Written by andy on Saturday, June 28th, 2008 in Comic Books.

It took me about 3-4 reads to get all the way through this one, mainly because I just wasn’t getting it.  This story is very well-written but right now Grant Morrison needs to put all this together.  Right?

Part of me loves how mysterious and promising this series is turning out to be; however I think that the more casual comic reader is going to be thrown for a loop.

I look forward to the next issue… right?

Age of Conan - After my free 30 day

Written by andy on Friday, June 27th, 2008 in Gaming.

Actually - it has been like 2 weeks past my free 30 days; however I thought I would climb up on my  digital soap box here and post a very short FYI.

Age of Conan is far from perfect, the user interface isn’t the best, but it works and it is just something you have to get used to.  (like all MMO’s)

Those players that have already hit the level cap and have complained about lots of elements of the game that doesn’t work.  My hat is off to you and thanks for documenting some of the development over sights, so that the power to be can address them before I get there.

I have yet to see a perfect game released , the only one that comes to mind if Starcraft, but it took Blizzard 10 years and many patches to get it balanced and near perfect.

I am having fun in the game, it has some of the best sounds and graphics around right now, well worth my $13.99 a month.

WALL-E: Excellent Date Movie

Written by andy on Friday, June 27th, 2008 in General.

This flick pretty much gave me everything I was looking for in an animated movie for this year.  It is meaningful, funny and heartfelt movie that is a great movie to take a date to.

WALL-E (short for “waste allocation load lifter Earth-class”) is a boxy little robot with big binocular eyes on a long E.T. neck. Every day he gets up, recharges his batteries in the sunshine and gets to work picking up armfuls of junk. He places the refuse in his trash-compactor body, reducing it to large cubes which he stacks to form soaring pyramids.

There are lots of these pyramids, suggesting that WALL-E has been hard at work for centuries. From the carcasses of worn-out robots we surmise that he once had help, but now he’s alone… or is he?

California Bans Talking While Driving, Sort Of

Written by andy on Thursday, June 26th, 2008 in Hardware.

You can use your phone to check your calendar, contacts, music, email and more — just don’t try using it to make calls.

That’s the rule for drivers without hands-free devices in an increasing number of states — including California, starting next week.

Beginning July 1, adult California drivers talking on their mobile phones without a hands-free device are subject to a $20 fine and a run-in with the law. The Golden State’s new traffic ordinance follows similar versions adopted in Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington state, the District of Columbia, New York and the Virgin Islands.

While the fines aren’t wallet-busting, there’s a hitch. Except in Washington state, an officer can pull you over solely for talking on the phone without a headset.

The laws are even stricter for new drivers. As many as 17 states and the District of Columbia ban cellphone use entirely for minors and new motorists while operating a vehicle (see map). They include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

The states’ cellphone driving laws were adopted with safety in mind. Studies by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis (.pdf) suggest 2,600 people are killed and as many as 330,000 people are injured each year in the United States in cellphone-related driving accidents.

"According to some estimates, getting drivers’ hands off the cellphones and onto the steering wheel will save almost 300 lives a year in California," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said at a recent news conference.

However, hands-free devices may not help. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have noted that voice-activated or hands-free calling is a major distraction, too.

Also, while talking may be banned, text messaging generally isn’t. Only Washington, Minnesota and New Jersey ban texting outright. That means in California, for example, a motorist can legally fumble around with a handset sending a text message, but will be breaking the law if he holds the phone up to his ear and starts talking.

Electronic stores, mobile-phone shops and online retailers are taking advantage of the new law to offer a wide range of specials on hands-free headsets. Headsets.com, for example, is offering a free (wired) headset to anyone who sends them a copy of a traffic citation for making calls while driving.

And be sure to check out Wired.com’s roundup of wireless headsets for our recommendations on the best hands-free gear for your phone.

Starcraft 2 - Terran Demos

I never saw these before, but being one of the mega-millions out there that has very much enjoyed played Starcraft over the years, watching these demos of Starcraft 2 makes the release date seem like years.

All Things Zombie: The Boardgame - Out By September 2008

Written by andy on Thursday, June 19th, 2008 in Gaming.

While it might sound like a twisted NPR program from a mirror world, All Things Zombie: The Boardgame takes place in our own world, with zombies once again challenging man’s dominance of the soil. Well, they are the undead, after all, so they don’t get tired of trying.

All Things Zombie: The Boardgame, designed by Ed Teizeira and Mark Walker, is a boardgame version of the miniatures rule system All Things Zombie and will be released by Walker’s Lock ‘n Load Publishing. The game retails for $50, with a preorder price of $40. “We work on a P500 basis,” says Walker, “which means we need to get a certain percentage of orders before we go to press. The game is ready and will be out by the end of summer.”

For details on the game play and a look at the artwork, head to Lock ‘n Load’s ATZ webpage.
