I really enjoy what I do for a living now. I get a rush each day when I get to talk about comic books. Not only what is coming out, but the stories, listening to what others thought, comparing notes and all of that stuff too.
However; it just isn’t comic books nowadays. It is also the movies, tv series, games and everything else that makes up the pop culture that we are part of.
There are those ‘bummer’ moments when someone will walk in with ‘the comic’ or so that think and today was not an exception.
A nicely dressed gent walked in with a ‘comic’ and wanted to know about it. He walked with with a tattered "2001: A Space Odyssey" Treasure Special.
After showing him a couple of other comics that we have that are of the same ’style’, I attempted to explain that the whole Treasury size comics were a novelty and didn’t do that well.
The gent then asked, "What can I get for it then? $10?"
I said, "No.. nothing. As I have 10 different Treasury size comics which haven’t sold"
Then it happens, the look of … "but this is from 1976… it isn’t worth anything?" I guess it was the dollar signs in his eyes that had him deaf to the whole, "novelty" part of my story.
They had great potential, these over-sized books allowed greater freedom for the artists and permitted comics fans to see comic art closer to original size than ever before. Neal Adams’ work on the Muhammed Ali vs. Superman book was just great… unfortunately, the print job muddied a lot of the fine line art. Overall, it was a trend destined to die out. At a time when the oversized Life and Look magazines were folding, DC’s and Marvel’s experiement were quite late."

I sure love to see people doing this type of material, when folks make fun (in a good way) of a subject matter, it just lets you know just how could it really is.
