Astonishing X-Men #25 - Review

Written by andy on Sunday, July 6th, 2008 in Comic Books, GamersCircle.

Simone Bianchi’s art? Coolness!

If you haven’t seen his work before now, check out issues of Wolverine from last year, I think that he has an amazing talent.

For me, me there were a few parts which where the art was a bit too dark, but overall Bianchi’s work is amazing.  And not just in his figure work either; his faces are expressive and individualistic, his panel layouts are interesting and he works in some fun perspectives.

Now as for Ellis’ writing, I have never really been a huge fan, I liked his Ultimate Human, but other titles were so-so, but this time he got his game on.  All of the characters have the ‘Ellis-ness’ about them, yet the characters still seem to retain their individualism at the same time

I am not sure where the end was going for me, so this means that I am going to have to get the next issue to make sure that I am reading what Ellis’ want me to get or not.

FINAL CRISIS #2 - Umm What?

Written by andy on Saturday, June 28th, 2008 in Comic Books.

It took me about 3-4 reads to get all the way through this one, mainly because I just wasn’t getting it.  This story is very well-written but right now Grant Morrison needs to put all this together.  Right?

Part of me loves how mysterious and promising this series is turning out to be; however I think that the more casual comic reader is going to be thrown for a loop.

I look forward to the next issue… right?

Hulk - Serious .. now

Written by andy on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Comic Books, Movies.

Solid acting and a pretty darn good story is all that was needed to wash away what you thought you witnesses from the Ang Lee’s version of this flick.  I think that the screenwriters along with the director established a firm foothold for the Jade Giant in Marvel Studio’s new big screen universe.  If the studio wishes to again bring the Hulk back to the box office, I am sure that they will be plenty of options to choose from.

I am sure that with the success of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, most will be looking forward to Marvel Studio films hitting theaters in the coming years — the current list includes:

Iron Man 2 and Thor in 2010
Captain America and The Avengers in 2011

Marvel Studios is well on the path in creating what all comic book and film fans have wanted for years:  Superhero movies that make sense, keep true to the story lines of the from "the day".

Hulk - Good!

Courtship of Eddie’s father, The Leader, Nick Fury, Stark Enterprises, Tony Stark, A-Bomb, Stan Lee, Louis Jude Ferrigno, Dr. Samson…

The theater was filled more than Iron Man, but it wasn’t summer vacation yet..

Nuff Said.

Whedon’s return to ASTONISHING X-MEN

Written by andy on Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 in Comic Books.

Joss Whedon, the father of things like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, and FIREFLY has been writing THE ASTONISHING X-MEN for the last few years. This new issue GIANT SIZED ASTONISHING X-MEN Issue #1 marks the end of Whedon’s run on the series in a double-sized issue that promised "someone will die."

The sporadic nature of the release of the issues of this series seriously debilitated the build-up to this finale. The hype surrounding Whedon’s last issue only lent itself to the let-down I got when I finished read the book.

The last few issues of this series took the X-men team into space to visit the planet of their new nemesis Ord, a world that lives in fear of Colossus coming to kill their entire world. In retaliation they launch a gigantic planet killing missile towards Earth. The X-men are busy battling on Ord’s home world, and Kitty Pryde phases herself into the missile to try and stop it from destroying Earth.

Ord actually tries to help Colossus and dies in the process which is kind of an interesting switch from where he started at the beginning of the series, and some of the other less than friendly to the X-Men join in on the side of right when the chips are down.

This issue guest stars most of the stars of the Marvel Universe as they try to figure out how to stop the giant missile hurtling through space towards Earth. While it is fun to see Whedon write a lot of the other characters, it seems like a typical cheap comic book ploy to get people to shell out five bucks for a book they normally wouldn’t pick up.
